Here in California, the name of Catholic healthcare has changed from Catholic Hospital West to Dignity Health.
Dignity Health has been joined by Ascension and Providence Health, each seeking to buy up not just hospitals, but every facet of healthcare, from urgent cares, clinics, nursing homes, in-home health to long term and hospice care.
The Goals of Dignity Health and other religious-based healthcare systems are frightening. Dignity Health is seeking to create tighter physician alignment and collaboration within a system that appears made up of independent community physicians and institutions, but are really a tightly controlled integrated healthcare delivery system providing Catholic Bishop directed healthcare through a series of healthcare services across multiple healthcare sites and levels of care.
In other words, Dignity Health’s goal is to control women and men’s access to healthcare throughout our lives, preventing access to reproductive and end of life care while taking taxpayer funding!
Don’t make the mistake of thinking this can’t happen in California. The recent Catholic Bishop takeover of Hoag Hospital in Orange County and the newly discovered “arrangement” between UCLA Medical and Ascension Health provides the backdrop in understanding the scope of the Catholic Bishop’s Catholic healthcare expansion plan.
